Melasma and Choasma
Melasma (also known as chloasma and the Mask of Pregnancy) is a facial skin discoloration, dark or tan in colour and appears as brown patches on the skin
Who is affected by Melasma?
It mostly occurs in women, but men can be affected
Especially prevalent in pregnant women Women taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
Men and women of Mid and Eastern European descent
Men and women of Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern and Northern African descent
Women with a light brown skin type who are living in regions with intense sun exposure are particularly susceptible
Genetic predisposition is also a major factor in determining whether someone will develop Melasma.
What does it look like?
Dark, irregular patches, often found on both sides of the face. Commonly found on the upper cheek, nose, lips, upperlip, and forehead.
